Genetic engineering and agriculture
In Austria, both consumers and farmers are very sceptical of genetic engineering and do not see any advantages in it. The freedom of choice is thus a central point of the European strategy on genetic engineering. There must be framework conditions which make GMO-free production possible for organic farmers, but also for conventional farmers who wish to renounce genetic engineering.

Steps to take
Austrian farmers need to find general conditions that allow them to farm without the use of GMOs. For this, not only GMO-free seed material is necessary but also clear regulations of coexistence and clear rules of liability. While the demand for GMO-free seed was satisfied through the adoption of the Austrian Seed Genetic Engineering Ordinance of 2001, further action is still needed with respect to the rules of coexistence and liability at European level. > more about: Steps to take
